Neville Spearman, London, 1959

8vo - over 7? - 9? tall. first UK edition. DW unclipped with little sign of wear, some scattered foxing to the white lower panel, Book starts with half title but I believe it was bound this way as at the rear the final leaf is also the final page (343) followed by a blank, no leaves appear to be removed. Top edge foxed, half title has pencil booksellers note and a slight amount of soiling, overall a VG+VG+ copy of this classic tale of a card shark and junky. Algren, Nelson : The Man with the Golden Arm

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, NY, 1949

1949. Frist Edition hardcover/dustjacket. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. True first edition/first issue without the National Book Award sticker on the dustjacket. Condition of hardcover: Light age toning, soiling (mostly to spine/backstrip), light wear to corners; else overall Very Good. Dustjacket: Price clipped; heavy wear/soiling; liquid stain at foot of front panel; age toning (darker at folds, spine panel); chips, open and closed tears (larger pieces missing from spine panel); creases; shelf wear; short cello tape on backside of D.J.; overall near Fair condition (but at least the book has the uncommon D.J.). Story reveals Frankie Machine, the skilled, well-loved dealer at a gambling joint. However, Frankie gets involved in drugs and can't kick the habit. The fascinating story is about lost and betrayed human beings. The author, with his skill and tenderness and poetic imagination, makes the reader care about what becomes of his characters, and does it magnificently. A wonderful story that was turned into a movie. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hard Cover.
