Walter Allen (1911-1995) was an English literary critic and novelist and was part of the Birmingham Group of authors. Although the Birmingham Group was characterized as proletarian in the 1930s, the Birmingham authors were known for their social mobility. In The Short Story in English, Allen examines the development of the short story in England and the U.S. from its first appearance in the late nineteenth century to the present.
