Small 8vo; recent dark brown half rexine, with slightly lighter brown cloth sides; spine lettered in gilt; new endpapers; pp. (ii) + 482. Edges trimmed down, touching on the text in a few later leaves; light browning throughout; scattered, moderate foxing. Very good condition. (Strange Collection 1324 [1878 edition]) Exceedingly uncommon early printing of the Greek Scriptures in Zulu. Josiah Tyler had overseen the first printing of the New Testament, a cooperative translation by various American missionaries, at the Esidumbini mission station in 1865. A revision of this translation was approved and the new edition duly appeared in 1872. That at least some copies of this version were printed by P. Davis and Sons as early as 1872- noted at the foot of the final text page - may not be generally appreciated. P. J. Schutte, in 'Sendingdrukperse in Suid Afrika 1800-1875' (p. 343), states: " 'n Derde druk het in 1878 by Davis in Pietermaritzburg verskyn."
