Anderson, Marian; Vehanen, Kosti; Civic Music Association : Original Signed Program - "The Civic Music Association, Presents, Marian Anderson in Concert; Kosti Vehanen at the Piano" (c. 1938)

Civic Concert Service, Inc.?; Hurok Attractions, Inc.?, New York?

Signed in blue ink by Marian Anderson and Kosti Vehanen on front. Original publisher's beige paper program; one leaf folded in half and printed on all four sides. No date, circa 1938 ("1938" written in black ink in upper-right corner on front). 5 1/2" x 8." Unpaginated, four pages, complete. Signatures are very clean and intact. Part of Vehanen's signature overlaps with the underline in Anderson's signature. Program is clean and intact overall but has a few wrinkles in the lower-left corner along the spine and some tearing and glue residue on the last two pages in the top margin. The tearing only slightly affects the names, "Aria" and "Giuseppe Verdi." Glue residue only appears on the last page. A Very Good copy. A stunning piece of historical ephemera, a program signed by Marian Anderson and her accompanist for this concert, Kosti Vehanen. The first page lists the program by song name and artist. The program consists of songs by Georg Friedrich Handel, Franz Schubert, Giuseppe Verdi, Yrjo Kilpinen, and Jean Sibelius and a collection of "negro spirituals" by Hall Johnson, Roland Hayes, John Payne, and Florence Price. The remaining pages briefly describe what the songs are about or provide an extract of the song lyrics (there are only descriptions for the songs by Handel, Schubert, Verdi, Kilpinen, and Sibelius). Marian Anderson (1897-1992) was an African-American contralto who received both national and international acclaim for her beautiful voice and singing talent. Despite facing racial discrimination, Anderson had a successful career and many accomplishments; among them, performing in an open-air concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on April 9, 1939, becoming the first African American to sing with New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1955, and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963. Kosti Vehanen (1887-1957) was a Finnish pianist and composer. Vehanen had a prolific career and performed in more than 3,000 concerts on four continents. He wrote a number of books, including Marian Anderson: A Portrait (1941), which is about the ten years he performed with Anderson as her accompanist.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
