The Gundpowder Plot of 1605 is one of the most commemorated events in English history. Yet this astonishing episode remains shrouded in mystery and the subject of passionate argument. The central aim of Antonia Fraser's rich and immensely readable book is to explain why there should have been a plot at all, and to understand why the courageous, idealistic, but terrifyingly misguided conspirators risked their lives for what they believed to be the cause of God and their country. Although Guy Fawkes is today the name best known for the thirteen conspirators, the plot was conceived and masterminded by the charismatic Catholic, Robert Catesby. Against the background of Elizabeth I's death and James I's accession, Antonia Fraser reveals the underlying motive of these men, including the gallant Sir Everard Digby the wealthy young Ambrose Rookwood and the Wintour brothers. Together, they came close to blowing up the House of Parliament and with them the King and Royal family. She brings to life the harsh condition endured by 029781348Xhe persecuted Catholic community, especially their illegal priests, condemned to secret refuges in safe Catholic houses (some of which still survive today), and an extensive cast of characters, not least the courageous Catholic women, with her usual biographical skill. Antonia Fraser has recreated the drama of the Gunpowder Plot in a narrative which reads like a gripping detective story. With sympathy and objectivity she untangles the intricate relationship between religion and politics in the early seventeenth century. Above all, she brings the distant events surrounding that fateful night of 5 November 1605 to dramatic life in ways which have an eerie resemblance to our own times, when the relationship of terrorism to idealism is till under dispute..
