Denys Val Baker,who lives in an old mill house near Land's End and who is the author of the well known series of books about his life there, writes in this new book of the spell that this Western tip of England - so well known in one way,so little in others - has exerted over writers through the ages,inspiring in them great works of art; he writes of the St Ives of Virginia Woolf,the Zennor of D. H. Lawrence,and the mining areas so well described in Winston Graham's and Hammond Innes's works. Through their eyes he succeeds in conveying to the reader the land of Celtic mystery,of prehistoric remains,where despite the gift and the tea shops the old Cornwall slumbers on. This edition is now out-of-print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's. William Kimber himself, worked for Hutchinson for about 17 years before founding "William Kimber & Co" in 1950.It specialized in aviation, war memoirs, autobiographies and motor-racing titles until 1973 when "Haunted Cornwall" took off and the Ghost Stories became another specialty.
