Many printed examples of types and small illustrations in black-and-white and color, complete. Any color in said illustrations is used as a solid colorblock or decorative accent. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and tiny dampstains limited to top and bottom edges of text block. Covers are very clean and intact except for light rubbing and slight wear to edges, corners, and head and tail of spine. A Near Fine copy. A comprehensive trade catalog for typefaces, typecast ornaments, and decorative borders and rules. Items for purchase include specifications and, in some cases, prices and brief descriptions. Most of the catalog showcases printed examples of the different typefaces and typecast decorations. In the back is a smaller section of type founding equipment and type accessories such as cupcast spaces and quads, iron furniture, steel stereo bases, stereotype and newspaper chases, metal furnaces, point-system saws, newspaper binders, and steel tableting presses. Among the many type examples depicted herein are Oldstyle and Modern Romans for printed media, job fonts for jobwork and advertising such as Authors Roman and Italic, Caslon, Cooper, Morris faces, Clearcut types, Adstyle, Gothic types, decorative borders and rules. and typeface ornaments (special characters, emblems, and illustrations) such as trademark symbols, vehicles, roosters, U.S. presidents, national statuary, Fourth of July, Red Cross, U.S. flags, geometric shapes, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, ad art, and floral and classical decorations. The publisher whose information is printed on the title is Barnhart Brothers & Spindler of Chicago, Illinois. This particular copy was intended for the Canadian market. Gilt lettering on front covers shows the Toronto Type Foundry Company of Canada as the "Exclusive Agents." The Toronto Foundry Company also has its information printed on a tipped-in piece of paper on the title page which instructs prospective Canadian buyers that the prices listed in this catalog are U.S. prices and that they need to contact the Toronto Foundry Co. to get the Canadian prices. Barnhart Brothers & Spindler was founded in 1868 (according to this catalog) as a manufacturer and merchant of type founding equipment and accessories by brothers Alson Barnhart, Arthur Barnhart, George Barnhart, and Warren Barnhart after they purchased the Great Western Type Foundry. The company became well-known for its type designs and catalogs and enjoyed many years of success. Barnhart Bros. & Spindler was bought out by the American Type Founders in 1911 with a proviso delaying its closure to give employees time to relocate or retire.
