Barra, acording to Cowan, worked at one time as a saloon keeper catering to the printing trade. These privately printed reminiscences are based on a log or 'sea diary.' Barra took the ship SAMSON from Philadelphia on October 5, 1849, and reached Rio de Janeiro on December 20. He changed ships to the Urania, on which he worked for his passage. He arrived at San Francisco on May 3 and made a partial list of abandoned ships in the harbor. Historian and collector John Goodman, in notes accompanying his copy, stated that Barra's Samson actually was the 371-ton ship HERCULES and that Captain Madian and not Brainard, guided the ship. The ship sailed from Philadelphia on October 23, 1849, and arrived at San Francisco on August 3, 1850. Goodman further stated that there was not a Samson of any kind arriving at San Francisco in 1849-50.". Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
