"The Nkana Coalfield is situated near the Tanganyika border in the northern part of the Karonga District. The Karroo rocks of the coalfield occupy the southern end of a tectonic basin, bounded on the western part by an unconformity, and are divided into two approximately equal parts by a major N.E.-trending fault. Lateral variation causes some differences in lithology of the lowermost Karroo rocks in the two areas. Several coal seams are contained in the upper part of the K 2 division in each of the areas, but the thickest individual unit is only 3 ft. 3 ins. These seams have rather a high dip, though assuming that only those occurring less than 500 ft. below the surface could be worked, it is estimated that approximately 14 million tons of coal exists. It is recommended that 'scout' drilling be carried out in order to test the quality of the coal at depth and also to give a more accurate and reliable estimate of the available tonnage." - The abstract.
