"Simon's Town is virtually as old as Cape Town. Effectively, it was Simon van der Stel who noted the potential of the bay when he made a survey in 1687. He found it 'protected from all winds by the surrounding high hills ... '. It was, says H. C. Willis, and still is the only place along the whole coast of S.A. where a large number of ships can lie at anchor in safety in all weathers at all times of the year. ... The editors have preferred to present a variegated and essentially humanised picture of Simon's Town's history, enlivened by biographies of the local personalities, administrators and benefactors - and supported by a rich collection of illustrations. There is a great deal about the Royal Navy, and its successor, the S.A. Navy (for the navies created a demand not only for supplies but for skilled artisans and technicians) and the contiuous stream of interesting visitors, all of whom contributed to the founding of a specially coherent and integrated little community."
