Former owner's signature and inscription in black ink on front free endpaper: "With fondest regards to Miss J. A. Saxton, Oct 17 1921, J. L. Halman." Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for slight age toning. Covers are very clean and intact with sharp corners but have a few marks to front and back and what appear to be small dampstain marks along the bottom edge of back cover. Binding is tight. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. A concise history of the capture of Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War. The capture of Virginia by the Union Army marked the last days of the Civil War. April 2, 1865, Evacuation Sunday, was the day when Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his Cabinet fled Richmond. On April 9, 1865, the Civil War ended with the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant. George A. Bruce (1839-1929) was an American politician and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army. He served as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and became President of the Massachusetts Senate. During the Civil War, Bruce took part in the Richmond-Petersburg campaign. Excerpt from Pages 1 and 2: "As this paper will contain only what came within my observation and experience, and is written with the hope of correcting more than one error that has crept into what are considered historic publications, it is not improper for me to say that I wrote an official account of the occurrences during the night of April 2, published in Serial 95 of the 'Records of the War,' and soon after a rather full account of the occupation of Richmond which is substantially the body of this article. This fact is mentioned solely to show that what follows is not a record made up from memory stretching back through the haze of half a century, but a transcript of events and experiences seen, participated in, and felt, as recorded by the writer at the time.".
