Buchan, William : ALS (3 pages) to his publisher regarding Domestic Medicine

1798, 1798

Single sheet (9 1/4" x 14 3/8") folded once, 4 pp., each 7 3/8" x 9 1/4". Addressed to his English publisher, Cadell and Davies, and dated July 12th, 1798. This 3 page letter (37 lines) is a timeless account of a frustrated famous author attempting to understand his publisher's inaction and motivate them to issue a new addition of his tremendously popular book, Domestic Medicine. It reads in part: "Gentlemen | I am daily teased by people enquiring where they can have the Dom. Med. I refer them to you, but it seems you cannot supply them with what they want. As I understand, from Mr. Preston, that the sheets were all printed off a considerable time ago. I should be glad to know if there is any good reason why the edition should not be published without delay. . ." As the letter progresses, Buchan's indignation and pique increase over the publisher's intransigence. And given the number of editions this book went through well into the 1800s, it is indeed hard to understand. The letter provides a fascinating look at the author publisher relationship as it existed over 200 years ago and, other than the period style of expression, is remarkably contemporary and indicates that human nature and business relations have not changed at all. The letter is in very good condition.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
