Green and white illustrated endpapers show a woman holding a cornucopia and basket of various crops in a verdant landscape. 5 1/4" x 8." All pages of all volumes, complete. 392 plates, most of which are in color, complete. Each of the volumes has forty-nine plates. List of Illustrations for the entire set in the front of Vol. I. Each volume also has its own List of Illustrations. Index in back of Vol. VIII. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Pages are slightly age-toned. Light foxing to endpapers. Vol. II has a few small dampstains limited to fore-edge of text block. Slight corner and edge wear and light rubbing to covers. A small "x" drawn in blue crayon or pencil in upper-right corners of all of the front covers. Near Fine copies. A comprehensive set about plant cultivation by the renowned botanist and horticulturist, Luther Burbank (1849-1926). Burbank was a pioneer in the field of agricultural science. In his career, he developed over 800 plant strains and varieties, which included fruits, vegetables, grains, cacti, grasses, and ornamental flowers. Among his specific plants are the Burbank potato (later developed into the Russet Burbank potato which is still popular today), white blackberry, spineless cactus, and rainbow corn.
