'Classics of Exploration' series, text facsimiles of the 1894 Memorial Edition by Tylston and Edwards. Two 8vo volumes; original brown padded leatherette covers, lettered in gilt, with borders ruled in gilt, red, and blind; a.e.g.; publisher's synopsis and blank bookplates loosely inserted; marbled effect to endpapers; ribbon markers; pp. xxxiv + (ii) + 209, (xii) + 276 + (iii); 2 maps; colour frontis. in each case, a further two colour plates, and 7 text diagrams in all (the list of illustrations in Vol. 1 erroneously calls for the "The Fal" facing p. 62: In fact, this picture did not appear in either the 1856 or the Memorial editions); appendices include Speke's diary, meteorological observations and a vocabulary of the Harari language. Very good condition. Burton's hazardous expedition to Somalia was his first in the company of John Hanning Speke, and the one on which he received a javelin through the jaw resulting in his trademark facial scar. The party was successful in entering the forbidden city of Harrar, but lost one of its officers. "They fought desperately, but Speke received eleven wounds, poor Stroyan was killed, Herne was untouched, and Richard Burton, sabreing his way through the crowd, heard a friendly voice behind him, hesitated for a moment, and received a javelin through both cheeks, carrying away four teeth, and transfixing the palate. He could not draw it out on account of its barb and had to wander up and down on the coast for hours for hours from night to daylight. They all managed to escape to the water's edge, where they hailed a native craft, which was just sailing out, and to whose master and crew Richard fortunately had shown great hospitality. They picked them up and managed to extract the javelin and bind up his jaws till they reached Aden." - Isabel Burton, in the Preface to the Memorial Edition
