12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a sensational archive of vintage United States Naval letters and notes, typed and handwritten by and to Captain Burton H. Shupper, Commanding Officer of the USS Providence, a nuclear weapons capable missile cruiser. Collectors and historians of US Naval history will delight in the breadth of authors, most heroes of World War II and the Korean conflict, represented in the incoming letters to Captain Shupper. Dated mostly 1962-63 the letters to Captain "Bunny" Shupper there are approximately 50 TLSs and about 21 ALSs; most with Shupper's retained carbon copies of the letters he sent [plus some personal non-naval papers not included in the count]. Included: Rear Admiral John M. Alford [1915-1988] Commander U. S. Naval Forces, Korea [1962-64]; Captain Draper L. Kauffman [later R. Admiral] [1911-1979] was a pioneering underwater demolition expert, who served during the 1960s as 44th Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy. During World War II, he organized the first U.S. Navy Demolition Teams, which later gave rise to the SEALs. His wartime service also included participation in the invasions of Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and leadership during the disposal of an unexploded 500 pound bomb after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor; Captain Tony Synnot [1922-2001] Admiral in the Royal Australian Navy and between 1979 and 1982 was Chief of the Defence Force Staff in Australia; James Henry Wakelin, Jr. [1911-1990] American physicist, oceanographer, and businessman who served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research and Development) from 1959 to 1964; plus Rear Admiral R.S. Benson; R.J. Coad; Commander E.S. Cornwall Jr.; Capt. Asbury Coward; Captain Mal Friedman; Capt. Jesse B. Gay Jr.; Phil H. Klepak; Capt. R.D. Mugg; Capt. George R.
