12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating, original, very charming 1932 manuscript relic of the Great Depression as experienced and observed by a young boy named Charles Dengler Jr. living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He celebrates his 16th birthday on July 3rd. Commencing January 25th Charles proves a very diligent young man in his work, school and home duties and keeping up his handwritten diary. Charles details his hard life, delivering newspapers, Church meetings, moving dirt and dozens of other odd jobs but never with a complaint and most of his entries are endearing. A busy, simple life one of his great treats and passions in his young life was listening to the radio. He also enjoyed "the Sunrise Service on WCAE". We also read of a 'leap year social and a Valentine's Day party combined' on January 27th. Here are some snippets: "...after school I carried coal up to the house from our gate. After supper, I took a pledge card to May Crede. When I came back I did some homework and listened to the radio." "...After supper, I went to church. Played cards and won on 500 game. Listened to the radio and the church bells and whistle at 12:00. Ate a lunch and went to bed at 12:40. Read the bible." Book measures 5-1/2" wide x 7-1/2" long. 252 packed pages. Cover shows wear, but all the hand-written entries are readable as are the advertising photos, etc. Overall G+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good
