A historical account of the 166th Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Rainbow Division," of the Ohio National Guard when it served in the 42nd Infantry Division's 83rd Infantry Brigade during World War I. The 166th Infantry Regiment traces its roots back to the 2nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry which was mustered into federal service on June 23, 1846 during the Mexican-American War. Between that time and World War I, the 166th Infantry was reorganized and mustered in and mustered out on multiple occasions. During World War I, the regiment was called back into federal service on July 15, 1917. It was reorganized as the 166th Infantry on August 20, 1917 and landed on the Western Front in February 1918. The 166th Infantry was a part of the Battle of Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. After the war, the regiment returned to the United States and was demobilized on May 17, 1919. The regiment was called to service several times after World War I and served during World War II and the Cold War. In 1992, the 166th Infantry became a part of the 148th Infantry Regiment.. Book.
