Child, Harold : The History and Extent of Recognition of Tribal Law in Rhodesia

(Salisbury: Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1965)

240 x 150 mm; printed side-stitched wrappers; pp. (ii) + xvi + 147. Wrappers very tanned and rather foxed, foxing and browning also to outermost leaves. Good. "Harold Child joined the Native Affairs Department of Rhodesia on 2nd October, 1916, at the age of 17 years, and the following year he proceeded on active service overseas. After the war, Mr. Child resumed service with the Ministry of Native Affairs, and eventually retired in 1954, after 38 years of service. During this period he was an administrative officer in charge of various districts in both Matabeleland and Mashonaland, and, as native commissioner and magistrate, gained a wide knowledge of African law and customs. During the last five years of his service he was an Under-Secretary in the Ministry and in charge of all development and resettlement in the Tribal Trust Land areas of Rhodesia. The experience and knowledge gained through this long association with African administration is now reflected in this book, which should be of great assistance to officers directly involved in the administration of African affairs in Rhodesia."
