Better known for his detailed,trompe-l'oeil surreal artwork for the Jonathan Cape published James Bond titles' dustwrappers, debuting with 'From Russia With Love' in 1957 and 8 other titles,'Octopussy and The Living Daylights' being the last. A really exceptional example for a paperback in such condition.A collectable item of its sexuality genre and highly sought after for an example of his stunning artwork - this depicting a man's face and close-up under his left eye,and to the foreground,a rose and two flies on the rose, all in pale pastel colours - and will be an important and welcome addition to those collectors,in either field. A startling ferociously honest and serious novel. It deals frankly and unsparingly with the sleazy underworld of homosexual London,in the 60s,with all of its 'queer' clubs,Turkish baths and pick-up joints.Boyde Ashlar, the chief character of this novel,is a man in his thirties whose life is dominated by his obsessive interest in young men from a different social stratum and in particular in a young masseur from a Turkish bath and a 17-year-old boy whom he picks up at a flower show. It is a near nightmare world in which Boyde Ashlar lives - there are the sleazy "queer clubs",with their young men in waiting, the Turkish bath, with its middle-aged,all-night denizens, the suffocating atmosphere of Boyde's home with his ageing beauty of a mother lying incontinently in bed; and there is above all the boy Roddy whose relationship with Boyde brings him to prison and crime and who in the end takes his terrible revenge. Richard Chopping (active 1939-45) An illustrator of natural history subjects and children's books.Among the former, 'Butterflies in Britain',in the Picture Puffin series,(drawn direct on the litho plate) is handled with assurance and a fine decorative sense.Chopping also contributed nature subjects and other illustrations to the Bantam Picture Book series - these are lively and humorous but sometimes slightly grotesque.'Mr Postlethwaite's Reindeer',a hardback, is illustrated in line.
