(Pietermaritzburg: photocopy by University of Natal Library, [1854])

Copy of the original sermon, published in London by Bell in 1854. 8vo; black rexine over boards, lettered in gilt on upper cover; pp. (ii) + 20. Library codes, labels and hand-stamps to endpapers; hand-stamp and code to preliminary page; some pencilled notations to first leaf. Very good condition. Practically unobtainable in original form (listed in SABIB 1, p. 584), and found in only a small number of repositories, this little volume records a landmark in the history of Natal and the Nguni peoples of southern Africa. Henry Callaway, though an amateur, became the outstanding anthropologist of his generation among the Xhosas and Zulus. It was through Colenso's offices that Callaway obtained his early appointment in Natal, an event recorded in this ordination sermon. However, the two men went their separate ways, and Callaway evidently did not feel himself beholden to Colenso to the extent of supporting him in the theological controversy that erupted following the latter's 'apostasy', choosing instead to remain aloof from the debate.
