The letter accompanies theatre tickets which he is sending. THOMPSON, JOHN (1785-1866), wood-engraver, son of Richard Thompson, a London merchant, was born at Manchester on 25 May 1785. He learned his art from Allen Robert Branston and became the most distinguished wood-engraver of his time. Thompson engraved the illustrations for Yarrell's great work on British Birds.
