UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG/VG.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Top corners slightly bumped with light creasing to head of spine/ backstrip.Book slightly cocked, contents bright and clean with slight ageing to fore-edges. Author's 5th book and one of her more uncommon titles. The charming and erudite Professor Kate Fansler investigates not,as one would expect,in New York, but in Oxford,England. The exquisite Max Reston is the last person whom Kate Fansler would expect to invade her rural retreat - and, as things turn out, he is nearly the last person. Soon the two of them are involved in the mysterious death of one of Kate's graduate students, Geraldine, found drowned in a rock pool, which leads Kate into a teasingly elusive investigation of a crime which may not be a crime. The trail leads to Oxford not only of today but of the Thirties and the war years, and into the tangled private lives of one or two of England's leading women novelists and feminists of that time. And as one would expect from any Amanda Cross story the problem is partly a literary one - the authorship of certain letters, the choice of literary executor. Partly, too, the problem is one of heredity: who is whose father? And the answers throw fascinating light on changing social mores and morals.
