That work listed references published during the two centuries between 1742 and 1950, which totalled just over 1,000 in number. Since 1950, interest in African paleontology has virtually exploded, so that in the intervening two decades more than 2300 additional publications have appeared. This enormous volume of material, published in a large number of different journals throughout the world, is making it increasingly difficult for researchers to avail themselves of the wealth of knowledge being uncovered in Africa.
