The first work that William Crossing gave this title to,was a series of newspaper articles which appeared in the Western Morning News in 1900.Later the text,with additions in the shape of the first chapter,five appendices and twenty-three illustrations was turned into a book,of which this volume is a facsimile; it to was published by the Western Morning News. The first edition came out in August 1901. It was an immediate success,indeed it is said that the first edition was sold out in a single day.The book ran through five editions,the last of which was published in March 1902.The work then lay dormant for sixty-five years,until 1967,when a new edition in a different format with new illustrations and an Introduction by Brian Le Messurier was published by David & Charles - who in turn ceased trading in the late 1980's.
