[G. 9-'86.] Title continues: Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of His Excellency the Governor. 330 x 216 mm; original printed side-stitched grey wrappers; pp. (ii) + 142 + xcv. Wrappers somewhat worn at extremities, with a little soiling and foxing; regular browning throughout, with sporadic foxing; shallow damp-stain to bottom fore-corner. Langham Dale (1826-1898), the author of this report, was the second superintendent-general of education in the Cape Colony. He revolutionised education in South Africa, introducing systems at primary, secondary and tertiary level, and produced 'the first complete and orderly review of Bantu education in the Cape Colony.' (DSAB I, p. 203) Dale was also one of the pioneers of South African archaeology, collecting and writing about Bushman implements. He was knighted in 1889.
