Original publisher's green cloth binding. 5" x 7." 323 pages, complete. Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Spine is faded. Back cover has a few small spots of discoloration. Mollie E. Moore Davis (1844-1909) was an American author, poet, and editor of the New Orleans newspaper, Picayune. During her career, she became a famous Texas writer with national recognition. She was commended in her time for her vivid portrayals of Texan scenery, people, and culture. This book is a Civil War novel set in Texas. The book is referenced in Wright III as no. 1424. This copy also belonged to Maltbie Daventport Babcock (1858-1901), a noted American clergyman, writer, and orator. While he published no books, Babcock authored the well-known Christian hymn, "This Is My Father's World," which was inspired by his frequent walks along the scenic Niagara Escarpment in upstate New York. Babcock's bookplate is tipped in on the front pastedown and shows small black and white illustrations of books and leaf motifs. The bookplate reads, "The Library of Maltbie Davenport Babcock.". Book.
