For five years from 1799 to 1804 Humboldt traveled throughout New Spain documenting his experiences. One of the books to emerge from his travels was the Essai Politique. The main focus of this work was Humboldt’s experience in the northern parts of New Spain with an emphasis on California and the northern province of Mexico. According to Hill “This important work, the third part of Voyage de Humboldt et Bonpland, contains the most complete and accurate picture of the natural resources of Mexico then available...It also contains references to the early exploration of the California’s. This octavo edition has a more extensive text that the earlier quarto edition and it lacks the dedication to Charles IV of that edition, which has caused Humboldt considerable difficulties with Napoleon. There is also a new “Avertissement de l’editeur” in three pages. The accompanying atlas is not present here. This work is considered a founding text in the fields of economic geography and political geography” (Hill)
