Datelined October 1879 at the University of Virginia. Card measures 3 1/8" x 4 3/4"; paper measures 7 1/4" x 10." Card reads: "M. Schele De Vere. University of Virginia. October 1879." Paper, card, and signature are very neat, clean, and undamaged. Maximilian Schele De Vere (1820-1898) was a professor of modern languages at the University of Virginia where he taught classes for over fifty years. He was born in Sweden and studied languages in Germany and Greek at Harvard. He and eighty-three other students also founded the American Philological Association in 1869.. Manuscript.
