Two handsome books with beautiful, detailed engravings of Egyptian landscapes, architecture, and art. The landmark work by Vivant Denon (1747-1825), a French artist, author, diplomat, and archaeologist. This book was published as a result of Napoleon Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt and Syria (1798-1801). Denon had been appointed by Napoleon as part of the Egyptian expedition which comprised an unusual demographic of French invading forces and 167 scientists and scholars. At times, Denon sketched ancient Egyptian monuments during the midst of battles. As noted in the translator's introduction, Denon's work is written as a journal containing both romantic observations of Egyptian art, culture, and artifacts and stark recollections of the brutal battles being fought during the French campaign. Most of the text is of the former. Also known as Journey in Lower and Upper Egypt (French: Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte), this book was instrumental in the formation of modern Egyptology and influenced the Egyptian Revival movement in the decorative arts and architecture.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
