DEPPING, George Bernard : L'Angleterre ou description historique et topographique

Duodecimo, six volumes (160 x 110 mm.), contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards. Spines with raised bands, gilt titles. Light wear to bindings head and tail. Retains contemporary silk pagemarks. With 58 early outline coloured maps (1 folding), 19 aquatint plates and three further engravings.

This series of miniature maps were drawn it is believed by Aristide Michel Perrot. They accompanied a topographical description of Great Britain by George Bernard Depping. He was a naturalised Frenchman who was born in Münster, Germany 1784 and became a professor of German and a member of the French Royal Society of Antiquaries. He died in 1853. Perrot was a geographer who produced a number of works related to this field. The maps appear to be the work of the Parisian engraver Adrien Migneret (1786-1840). Each is adorned with what appears to be unrelated imagery. A very nice example of the first edition. Provenance: private English collection. Carroll no. 83; not in Chubb.
