Born, raised, and educated in Beverly Hills, David Deutsch was discouraged by his wealthy family to pursue an artistic career. To his credit, he would not talk about what appears to have been a difficult childhood and adolescence. He became a world-class economist and joined the Peace Corps before moving to New York to become an artist. Best-known for his conceptual yet figurative paintings, his lifelong subject is "virtual nothingness", that which "appears vast and endlessly deep, that which is perceived but is not obviously visible". He is an artist with a loyal cult following and is associated with such major figures as Robert Mangold, Keith Sonnier, and Brice Marden.
