Doke, C. M. and Vilikazi, B. W : Zulu - English Dictionary

Witwatersrand University Press, Johannesburg, 1948

903 pages (complete). A most important publication. Clement Doke was one of the first and finest of African linguists of European origins. Originally a Baptist Missionary, Doke became, the early 1930s head of Bantu Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was in this capacity that he most controversially championed the appointment of Benedict Vilikazi to the staff as he believed that it was essential to learn a language from a native speaker. Vilikazi came to be the first African to earn and receive a Ph.D. Vilikazi street in Soweto (where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived) is named after him. Together, Doke and Vilikazi produced this dictionary, published in 1948. It is still regarded as one of the finest works of lexicography for any of the Bantu languages. This copy is much used, but is secure, dignified and resolute. The covers, although knocked and scuffed, are serious and sure. The spine and binding are strong and flexible. The early pages have some creasing. The paper trims have usage markings. The guttering along the front page is open but is still secure and fixed. The pages are relaxed, comfortable, confident, clean, clear, firm against the binding and genial. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
