Marbled endpapers. 6" x 8 3/4." Vol. I: 445 pages, complete; thirty-four color plates, complete. Vol. II: 465 pages, complete; twenty-five color plates, complete. Illustrations in Vol. I are principally of unique geological formations and of Indigenous artifacts, structures, and petroglyphs. Illustrations in Vol. II are mostly portraits of Indigenous people from different tribes. Plates are done in a half-tone, sepia, or monochromatic color palette. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for age toning and occasional foxing. Binding is very tight. Covers are very clean and intact except for slight rubbing to boards, some edge wear, and light surface chipping to spine. Very Good copies. A nonfictional account of "deserts" and other places in the United States with special emphasis on Indigenous cultures. Emmanuel Domenech (1825-1903) was a French abbot (French: abbe), missionary, and author. Some of the places discussed are the "Northern Prairies of Texas," "Deserts of the South-east," "Deserts of the South-west," "New Mexico," and "Deserts of the West," as well as more specific, local points of interest not typically associated with deserts such as Rio of San Jose, the Sierra Nevada, and the Columbia River. A discussion of Indigenous artifacts and a list of the names of Indigenous tribes in back of Vol. I. The end of Vol. I segues into Vol. II which is dedicated to discussions and observations of Indigenous tribes in the United States. Topics of Vol. II include an overview of the tribes; Indigenous languages, "festivals and industry," customs, and religions; and the plight of Indigenous Peoples amid colonization of the U.S.. Book.
