EDWARD, Duke of Windsor. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. A single sheet, imprinted with the Duke's initial and motto at the head, addressed to Herbert E. Macauley, Mayor of Newport, R.I. The letter is dated August 24, 1944, and the body of the message is twenty-two typed lines. In his letter, Windsor thanks the mayor for an illuminated copy of a resolution which had been presented to him when he attended the dedication of the Federal Recreation Building, "the first U.S.O. unit to be erected for and staffed with all negro personnel." He continues: "As Governor of the Colony of Bahamas I have devoted four years to improving the conditions of the negro community under my care and I, therefore, congratulate the City of Newport... [for] providing social amenities for negro service men stationed in Newport." Beneath a typed closing, it is boldly signed in ink: Edward. A few small spots at one corner, else fine.
