12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a super, original 1876 manuscript diary handwritten by Bowdoin College medical student Edwin F. Stetson who would later successfully become a doctor. The 7.5 x 3.25 inch leather 100+ page diary, written in pencil, filled for the entire year with the day to day activities, studies, socializing making for a fascinating look at the training of this young man. Here are some snippets including some entries the autopsies he attended. He writes "Doctor Holmes showed us some microscopic slides today. Will and Geo Curtis went up on Court Street to see the soldiers and sailors in formation. Than went down to my first Autopsy a man and a darkey girl home on the steam cars at five". Yet another entry regarding an autopsy: "went to an autopsy of a man 46 years old studied in the eve. Went into the operating room saw four operations preformed got a gold pen on way to fields $ 1.75." He also writes about his experiences at Bowdoin with friends, and classmates they played lots of "Whist", sang went to church and into town. Overall G+. HISTORICAL NOTES: Bowdoin College is a private liberal arts college located in the coastal Maine town of Brunswick. Founded in 1794, famous alumni include Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Franklin Pierce, and Joshua Chamberlain. Bowdoin was listed as the fourth-best liberal arts college in the U.S. in the 2014 U.S. News & World Report rankings. Although Bowdoin's Medical School of Maine closed its doors in 1921, the College is currently known for its particularly strong programs in the natural sciences. One illustrious alumnus was Dr. Augustus Stinchfield, who received his M.D. in 1868 and went on to become one of the co-founders of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was asked to join the two Mayo brothers' private medical practice in 1892. In 1915, the remaining partners in the then private practice embraced the creation of the non-profit Mayo Clinic. While perhaps Bowdoin's better-known alumnus in the sciences is the controversial entomologist-turned-sexologist Alfred Kinsey, class of 1916, the College's reputation in this area was cemented in large part by the Arctic explorations of Admiral Robert E.
