Henry Gamadge has nothing on his amiable mind but the sun and a gentle October breeze the afternoon he and his elderly cousin, Miss Abigail Ryder, walk over to the Redfield estate to attend Johnny Redfield's party. It is a small and somewhat ill-assorted party at which only the imperturbable Henry seems completely comfortable. When the strain gets too much for Redfield, he suggests that they all go for a walk. Henry, strolling along in conversation with another member of the party, reaches the rock garden and comes face to face with death. Followers of Miss Daly's Henry Gamadge will not need to be told that the witty Henry can quickly turn into even the quickest and most efficient Gamadge is not quick enough to prevent further violence and death..
