He is best-known for his work on the Mary Worth comic strip, which ran from 1942-1985. Allen Saunders (1899-1986) was an American writer, cartoonist, and journalist. He wrote for the Steve Roper and Mike Nomad, Mary Worth, and Kerry Drake comic strips. Mary Worth is a dramatic comic strip about an older woman who give advice to people with relationship problems and her acquaintances. Depending on the source, the Mary Worth comic strip is considered a continuation of the Depression-era comic, Apple Mary (1932-1938), which was about an older woman trying to make ends meet as a food vendor. According to the King Features Syndicate, Mary Worth is not a continuation of Apple Mary, but Saunders wrote in his autobiography that he felt it would be better if he rewrote Mary Worth as a suburbanite instead of a food vendor. This is a three-panel comic strip. Mary Worth does not appear in this particular comic. Panel One: An older woman stands in the doorway while her son, Dean, and a younger woman, Cosette, face her. Dean says, "Come in, Mother! Cosette and I have an important announcement to make!" The older woman replies, "Really Dean? I'll be ... interested to hear it, I'm sure!" Panel Two: Dean is not visible but says, "Let me put it this way ... just one week from today you'll be donning a mother-of-the-bridegroom dress!" The older woman looks surprised. Panel Three: With a dissatisfied expression on her face, the older woman says, "Well! This is a ... a surprise! I had understood that you were not going to ... to take such a serious step hastily! I hope neither of you has cause for regret!" Dean and Cosette look at her and stand aside with looks of frustration.. Comic. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
