First Edition (first printing). 8vo. viii, 222pp. Green cloth lettered in blue at the spine (I believe there was also an issue bound in blue cloth). With a title page decoration, forty-one full-page pen and ink illustrations, and various vignettes and decorations in the text. Top edge spotted and with a touch of bruising and light wear to the backstrip ends and corner tips. The binding cracked at the final text leaf, but still perfectly sound. A nice bright copy. No dust wrapper. Evelyn Dunbar's second bookform appearance, consisting of the history, characteristics and cultivation advice of forty garden plants which she co-authored with her Royal College of Art tutor Cyril Mahoney (the two had previously collaborated on a 1933-36 commission to design and paint a series of murals at Brockley Country School for Boys, but by the time this book was published their relationship has broken down. It is now fairly well established that Dunbar wrote most of the text and designed all of the vignettes, as well as producing at least ten of the pen and ink drawings). Much of the research for this volume was conducted by Dunbar and Mahoney in Edward Bawden's garden at Great Bardfield; Bawden even penned a foreword but it was delivered too late to appear in the final published version..
