Covers are clean but have moderate edge wear and worn corners and spine. Vol. I has a large chip in lower-right corner of front cover and significant damage to binding (severe chipping to spine and covers are only being held in place by the interior bands). Leather portions of the spines are missing on Vols. II-IV. Each volume and the collection as a whole are Good. This is a collection of four justice's dockets kept by three judges of Reedley, Fresno County, California and perhaps others. Vol. I contains cases kept by John Fairweather from 1906-1907. Vols. II and III contain cases kept by Albert Holderman (1877-1933) from 1923-1924. Vol. IV contains cases kept by Rex Porter (1863-1946) from 1931-1935. All four dockets were kept for the Eighth Township in Fresno County and summarize actions taken for small claims cases. Most of the entries list the case number, names of the plaintiff and defendant, the amount of money demanded, and summary of actions taken for the case. In some cases, the names of the attorneys are listed. The following are a few example cases in each volume (monetary figures are the amounts demanded; plaintiff is named first in the case name). Vol. I: 1) No. 2, Marion Deneen vs. H. M. H. Kaarsburg; $87.40 plus interest; Kaarsburg did not appear in court so the money was awarded by default to Ms. Deneen, and calculations of interest and costs are figured at the bottom of the entry. 2) No. 3, Southern Pacific Co. vs J. Pierson; $12.80; case dismissed after Pierson came to court to pay the bill. 3) No. 23, [--?] Land & Water Co. vs. [O.?] Hollingworth; $150.00; a dispute involving "120 sacks of barley and 103 bales of hay." 4) Several cases in which plaintiff Mrs. H. Osborne; $48.33; case dismissed when plaintiff came to court and said the bill had been paid. 2) No. 4, I & A Clothing Co., Inc. vs Joseph Seaman; $9.20; two I & A receipts attached by pin; upon Seaman's non-appearance in court, judgment was made in favor of I & A. 3) No. 105, C. Bacthold & Son vs. I. L. Nikkel; $48.60; defendant paid plaintiff three installments of $10.00 via check and the remaining $18.60 was "recover[ed] from the Defendant."
