Signature of Charles Benjamin Farwell in black ink on a beige piece of paper tipped in on a brown piece of paper. Signed, "C. B. Farwell, [Mc?]." No date, circa 1850s-1890s. Paper with signature: 3 1/2" x 1." Brown paper backing: 6 3/4" x 1 3/4." Signature is clean and intact overall but there is a smudge affecting "Farwell" and his inscription that may read, "Mc." Both pieces of paper are clean and intact overall, but there is age toning on both and the piece of paper with signature has the smudge. Small stains on brown paper backing. A Good copy. Charles Benjamin Farwell (1823-1903) was an American politician and businessman. Farwell was born in New York but later moved to Illinois for his political career. From 1853-1861, he served as Clerk of Cook County. Farwell served multiple terms in the United States House of Representatives. He served as a U.S. Representative for Illinois's 1st District from 1871-1873 and as a U.S. Representative for Illinois's 3rd District from 1873-1876 and 1881-1883. Farwell also served in the U.S. Senate for Illinois from 1887-1891 following the passing of Senator John A. Logan. As a senator, Farwell supported the introduction of a Constitutional amendment that would grant women the right to vote which was did not come to fruition until the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920..
