Second edition, revised. xii + 412 + 7 pp. + [1] pp. 8vo., green cloth stamped in gilt. Cloth worn, rubbed, spine chipped at heel and crown. Spine has circular dime-sized stain. Ex-library with no external markings. Hinges cracked; coated brown endpapers rubbed. Ink gift inscription on first blank recto. Frontispiece and three albumen photo plates mounted to stiff stock in very good condition; frontispiece looks heavily retouched, and two plates are reproductions of paintings. Forbes (1804-1889), a Massachusetts born merchant who dealt in the China trade; one of his conspicuous acts was his aid to the sufferers of the Irish famine of 1846- 7, when the United States Government sent him out in command of the frigate Jamestown. In 1858 he went on a Government expedition to the Pacific ocean. In the civil war he organized the coast guard. He was one of the founders of the Sailor's Snub Harbor and was the inventor of the "Forbes Rig.", Very Good
