Winifred Fortescue,b. 7th February 1888 – d. 9th April 1951, was a British writer and actress. The wife of Sir John Fortescue, librarian and archivist at Windsor Castle and reputed British Army historian, she became formally styled Winifred,Lady Fortescue, when her husband was knighted in 1926. In the 1930s they both moved to Provence,France, where she began her book writing career with 'Perfume from Provence'. She wrote a number of other books there. Her husband died within 2 years of them moving to France but she stayed on until forced to move out by the German invasion during WW2.After her husband's death whilst out rambling, she discovered a derelict stone house on a hill, surrounded by olive groves. Eventually she was able to acquire and buy the house and began renovating it.This book, her second best-seller after the first best-seller 'Perfume from Provence', chronicles her experience in doing so. Under the house,in the rock was an old sanctuary used as a pigstY,but converted to a chapel by her,to the delight of her neighbours. She continued to write,as although they had moved to France partly for health and financial reasons, she needed money for the restoration and garden.Although known as 'Sunset House' in her writings, she called it 'Domaine de Fort Escu'.She returned at the end of the war and died in Opio,Provence.
