Collection of fourteen original letters to F. C. Bissell and one report about John Fitch and shipbuilding. Most of the letters are written in black ink on beige paper but at least one is typed or printed. The report may be a carbon typescript. Various dates in 1910 (one of the letters is undated but presumed to be 1910 and there is an undated report, circa 1910). Letters measure between about 4 1/2" x 6 3/4" and 8 1/2" x 11." Twenty-two pages. Each document is clean and intact overall except for fold lines, slight age toning, slight wrinkling, and the occasional small stain. Barber's two letters, the five-page report, and one of Chandler's letters have been chewed and have missing portions measuring about 1" x 2." The chewing damage on Chandler's letter is limited to the margins. There is some loss of text from the chewing on Barber's letters and the report, but most of the text is still intact. The three items with chewing damage are Good. The remaining letters and the entire collection are Very Good. Frederic Clarence Bissell (1848-1931) the Deputy Comptroller of the State of Connecticut in 1910. During this time, he undertook an effort to locate paintings or photographs of former state comptrollers. He wrote relatives, local officials, and historians, trying to determine if such images existed and where they might be located. This collection consists of letters from individuals answering Bissell's queries. The correspondents are W. H. Burnham (Hampton Town Clerk and Treasurer), Joseph Hooper (Durham), S. McLean Buckingham (Watertown attorney), C. E. Chandler (Norwick engineer), Chas. J. Abell (Lebanon Town Clerk), Jonathan Trumbell (Otis Library, Norwich), Myron L. Gunn (Milford), Louis B. Hubbard (New York City), William J. Barber (Harwinton). Each correspondent has one letter except for Chandler (who has three) and Trumbull, Gunn, and Barber (each of whom have two). Bissell is looking for images of the following individuals: Abijah Catlin, Mason Cleveland, General Wadsworth, Leman W. Cutler, Roger Huntington, Ebeneezer Geary, John Porter, J. G. Lamb, Abijah Carrington, and John Dunham. The report may be a transcription of the 1887 report of the Connecticut Legislature Special Committee on the "discoveries and inventions of John Fitch of Windsor," which briefly discusses Fitch and his role in shipbuilding and ship design..
