The first British warship lost in World War II.

This is a cross-section of the HMS Courageous (1916 - 1939). She was originally built as a cruiser during World War I, and was decommissioned after the war ended. During the 1920s she was refitted and re-commissioned as an aircraft carrier, serving for the most part as a aircraft training platform in the North Sea. On 17 September 1939, during the opening weeks of the Second World War, she was sunk by a German U-Boat while patrolling for submarines off the coast of Ireland. Over 500 of her crew sank with the ship, which prompted the British Navy to pull aircraft carriers out from submarine patrol. She was the first British warship to be sunk by enemy forces in World War II. It was seen as a signal victory for the German navy, and its commander was awarded an Iron Cross 1st Class. Its crew all received the 2nd Class of the same award.
