This is an example of a Shakespeare-class (or Thornycroft type leader) destroyer. They were built to sail at the vanguard of a destroyer flotilla--an ensemble of naval ships specifically targeted at torpedo boats. As flotilla leaders, they were built slightly larger than most destroyers in order to house signal equipment, larger crews, and a fifth gun. Two Shakespeare-class destroyers served in World War I (one of which was badly damaged by a mine and scrapped). Three new ones served in World War II, one in the Allied invasion of Sicily, one destroyed during the Allied assault on Tangiers, the last serving throughout the War and dismantled in 1945.
