First edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 23 pages, 24 cm. In French. Title translates to Don Salomon Ibn Yache, Duke of Metelin. ” Aben Yache (1520–1603) was a prominent Marrano statesman. In 1585 he settled in Turkey where he reverted to Judaism under the name Solomon Abenaes. Because of his wealth, experience, and connections, he came to be highly regarded at the Turkish court, renewing the position of Joseph Nasi, who had died in 1579. Abenaes was one of the architects of the Anglo-Turkish alliance. Shortly after his arrival in Turkey, Abenaes secured the renewal, in his own favor, of the grant of Tiberias and seven adjoining townships that had originally been made to Nasi. His name is thus associated with this important attempt to reestablish an autonomous Jewish life in Erez Israel (EJ, 2007) . SUBJECTS: Jews -- Turkey -- Biography. Diplomats -- Turkey -- Biography.
