This book contains the official records and a brief history of the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment that served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Also included are abstracts of muster rolls, a brief history of the general United States military operations in the Philippines, and reports of general officers with appended reports of Oregon Volunteer officers. The members of the 2nd Oregon were the first of the Oregon National Guard to serve overseas, and they were also the first unit of the U.S. Army to land in the Philippines. The 2nd Oregon was named so because the 1st Oregon Regiment had already been organized in 1864 for the express purpose of protecting overland trade routes and pioneer wagon trains. The 2nd Oregon was organized on May 8, 1898 following the destruction of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. Oregon was considered to have one of the better trained and equipped guards at the time, so President William McKinley requested that Oregon recruit an infantry from the National Guard. The 2nd Oregon took part in the surrender of Guam and the surrender of the Spanish Army in Manila. The last company of the 2nd Oregon was mustered out in August 1899.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
