El autor nacido en Heidelberg (1705-1780), estudió en las Univs. de Harderwijk y Leiden. Fue pupilo de Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1735) y de Bernhaed Siegfried Albinus (1697-1770). Se graduó con una tesis sobre medicina psicosomática. Más tarde siguió sus estudios en París y en 1731 fue invitado a Leiden por Bernhaave como lector de química en la Universidad.
