On offer is a simply smashing, original late 18th Century manuscript book handwritten and executed in a lovely, mature hand of an advanced student executed superbly with ochre [?] borders of complex mathematical diagrams, longitudinal and latitude charts, hand colored flourishes, illustrations and accents making for a wonderful, ancient book which is one part cyphering work book of complex mathematics, algebra, trigonometry etc. and when turned over a book of education and exercises in seamanship and nautical formulae with Chapters such as: Astronomical Definitions, Gnomonicks or The Art Of Dialling and much much more. Inscribed on the inside cover with a drawing done by the writer, 'George Shapland, His Book March 22 1788.' The first 74 pages of the 8 x 6.5 inch book are comprised of nautical and astronomical definitions presented in beautiful calligraphic hand with many, many confidently hand drawn illustrations. Reverse the book and there are 101 pages of mathematics explaining algebra and surd quantities with different chapters, such as 'substition' and the solution of 'quadratick equations'. Once a premium vellum journal the outside covers are soiled and there is an interior crack of the text block though still a remarkably tight volume making for overall G.. Manuscript.
