Uncommon biography of the Voortrekkers' spiritual leader, whose name is particularly associated with the vow taken at the instance of Andries Pretorius on behalf of his compatriots prior to the battle against the Zulus at Blood River, or Ncome. The battle was for many years commemorated as the Day of the Covenant (or Dingaansdag) in South Africa. Since 1994, however, the focus has changed, and the public holiday on December 16 is known as the Day of Reconciliation. "Cilliers's sermons from the Old Testament gave Pretorius the idea of a covenant. Although Cilliers had reservations about the fulfillment of such a covenant he nevertheless concurred and with the approval of the entire commando took the lead in framing it (9.12.1838), at Wasbank. After that it was repeated every day. On the evening of 15 December, at what is now Blood River, it was repeated for the last time. Cilliers is regarded by some (among others, G.B.A. Gerdener) as the father of the Covenant. This estimation is questionable, but his spiritual enthusiasm certainly helped to inspire the commando with steadfast trust in God. The wording of the Covenant generally accepted today follows that in Cilliers's memoirs, written in 1871. On 16.12.1838, at the battle of Blood River, Dingane's Zulu warriors were repulsed when a party of which Cilliers was a member (according to his memoirs) beat off an attack launched from the donga and almost 400 Zulu perished." - DSAB IV, p. 84.
